What to do if you see someone hit a parked car and drive away

Watching a vehicle strike a parked car and leave can happen in seconds. What you record immediately afterwards may be extremely useful to the owner.
CarAlert exists for exactly this awkward gap: you can see the vehicle and its registration, but you do not know the owner and should not need their personal details just to pass on a useful warning.
What to do
- 1Prioritise safety and do not chase or confront the other driver.
- 2Write down the registration, vehicle description, location, time and exactly what you witnessed while it is fresh.
- 3If safe, photograph visible damage and the scene from a lawful public position.
- 4Use the appropriate Garda/official reporting route where relevant.
- 5You can also send the parked vehicle's owner a private CarAlert so they know there may have been an incident.
Important
- A CarAlert is not a substitute for making an official report where one is required.
- State facts you personally observed and preserve original photos or notes.
