What to do if you see a parked car with its lights left on

You walk past a parked car and notice the headlights or interior lights are still on. The owner may be only a few minutes away - or may not notice until the battery is flat.
CarAlert exists for exactly this awkward gap: you can see the vehicle and its registration, but you do not know the owner and should not need their personal details just to pass on a useful warning.
What to do
- 1Check that the lights really appear to have been left on; some modern vehicles keep lights on briefly after locking.
- 2Note the registration without touching the vehicle.
- 3Enter the reg on CarAlert and send a simple message such as 'Your headlights appear to be left on.'
- 4If the owner has registered the car, they can receive the heads-up and decide what to do.
Important
- Do not attempt to open the car or switch anything off yourself.
- If the vehicle is creating an immediate road hazard, use the appropriate official route.
