Someone left their boot open - what should you do?

An open boot can expose belongings to theft or rain, and the driver may have walked away without noticing.
CarAlert exists for exactly this awkward gap: you can see the vehicle and its registration, but you do not know the owner and should not need their personal details just to pass on a useful warning.
What to do
- 1Check whether the owner is obviously nearby.
- 2Do not reach into the boot or handle belongings.
- 3Note the registration and send a CarAlert saying the boot appears open.
- 4If you see active suspicious behaviour, use the appropriate official route.
Important
- Do not close or search the boot yourself unless there is a genuine emergency and it is safe and lawful.
- Avoid photographing visible personal belongings unnecessarily.
