How to contact the owner of a parked car in Ireland

You have spotted something wrong with a parked car, but there is no obvious way to tell the person who owns it. That is a surprisingly common everyday problem.
CarAlert exists for exactly this awkward gap: you can see the vehicle and its registration, but you do not know the owner and should not need their personal details just to pass on a useful warning.
What to do
- 1First decide whether the situation is an emergency. If someone is in immediate danger, use the appropriate emergency service rather than relying on an online alert.
- 2If it is a non-emergency issue - lights left on, an open window, visible damage, a flat tyre or something hanging from the car - note the registration accurately.
- 3Use CarAlert to enter the registration and send a short factual heads-up. If that vehicle is registered, the owner can receive the alert without their name, email address or other personal details being shown to you.
- 4Describe only what you can actually see. A message such as 'your left rear window appears to be open' is more useful than guessing what happened.
Important
- A registration plate is not a public directory of owner contact details. Do not try to identify or publish the owner.
- For collisions, crime, danger or emergencies, CarAlert is a supplementary community tool rather than a replacement for Gardaí, emergency services, insurers or property management.
