Why private vehicle alerts can be more useful than posting a registration on social media
CarAlert · Published 10 September 2026 · Updated 10 September 2026
When people want to find a vehicle owner, the default response is often to post a photograph or registration into a local Facebook group. That can work occasionally, but it broadcasts the issue to thousands of people who do not need to be involved.
CarAlert exists for exactly this awkward gap: you can see the vehicle and its registration, but you do not know the owner and should not need their personal details just to pass on a useful warning.
What to do
- 1A private alert is targeted: the useful information is routed toward the owner rather than the entire community.
- 2It avoids asking strangers to identify a person publicly.
- 3It can be faster for an owner who has already registered their vehicle.
- 4Public groups can still be useful for broader community information, but a direct private notification is often cleaner for a simple vehicle problem.
Important
- Do not imply that registration plates must never appear publicly; the point here is data minimisation and relevance.
- For crime or emergencies, use official channels.

Frequently asked questions
- Why not just post in a local group?
- You can, but a targeted alert avoids broadcasting the situation unnecessarily.
- Does CarAlert expose the owner?
- No. The product is designed around passing the alert without revealing owner contact details.
