What should you write in a CarAlert message?
CarAlert · Published 10 September 2026 · Updated 10 September 2026
The best vehicle alert is short, factual and actionable. The owner should understand what you saw in a few seconds.
CarAlert exists for exactly this awkward gap: you can see the vehicle and its registration, but you do not know the owner and should not need their personal details just to pass on a useful warning.
Key points
- 1Say what you observed: 'Your headlights appear to be on.'
- 2Add a useful location detail only when needed.
- 3If you witnessed an incident, separate facts from assumptions.
- 4Avoid insults, threats, jokes or unnecessary personal commentary.
Important
- Never claim certainty about something you did not witness.
- Do not include sensitive information that the owner does not need.

Frequently asked questions
- How long should the message be?
- Usually one or two clear sentences are enough.
- Should I include my contact details?
- Only if the live product deliberately supports that and you choose to; the core CarAlert model does not require exchanging personal details.
CarAlert is an independent Irish community vehicle-alert service. It is not an emergency service, enforcement body, insurer or vehicle-owner directory. For collisions, crime or danger, contact the appropriate official channel. Browse all guides.
